Most people quit. If you don’t quit, if you rewrite, if you keep publishing in fancier places, you will understand that “What’s the secret?” is not the question, which is, “Are you having fun?”

I think you're right. Put another way: The secret IS having fun. Making something where there was nothing is a high like no other I've found - and I've looked quite a bit over the years...thanks for this reminder!
agreed! as soon as i realize i'm not having fun in a story/chapter/etc, i challenge myself to daydream about said (fictitious) space...and i go off of that! it could be the design on the side of a cup, the color of an ant, or a stray hiccup that leads to other curious vignettes.
